Small World Theatre presented a fantastic lantern parade on the evening of new years day processing through Cardigan to the prince of Wales Quay . A magical string of lanterns in the shape of stars, fish, vikings, and giant flowers were interspersed with a river monster a space ship, and a larger than life Bull. This wonderful collection of illuminated lanterns was accompanied by a improvised choir led by Lou Laurens singing a traditional Welsh new years day song that merged and flowed with the tide and picked up snippets of cowboy songs and memories of river tunes. This enchanting event was to welcome in the 2010 and Llywd Edwards from the Cardigan 2010 committee introduced the event praising the ingenuity of the community that had made the lanterns at a series of workshops held at Canolfan Byd Bychan / Small World Centre. Thanks to all those who braved the impending weather and the Small World team who made this such a great event.

With the excellent help of Paul Oakley and his team the star and flower lanterns were floated from his boat down the Teifi. In the stars wake the river monster gracefully followed. However it slipped it's tethering rope and it too was seen to sail into 2010 with all the positive wishes and hope that the crowd conveyed. The other floating lanterns were all bio degradable but not this monster. Luckily hero of the evening, Tom Bean, spotted it across from the St Dogmaels jetty and rowed his boat out to capture the monster wrestling it back to dry land.

The snow started falling on us all as we ate baked potatoes and drank mulled wine( thanks Tom & lara) meanwhile the sky lanterns made a brave attempt to launch against a building flurry of snow the choir's unearthly drone encouraged them to soar. A few made it skyward and disappeared into the increasing blizzard that left the town eerily white and also magically illuminated.
