Space

KATES HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL DUDLEY

This project took place in Dudley throughout January and February 2006

With 50 participants we explored Space, all sorts of space, inner space, outer space the space between us, the planets and beyond.

We are also interested in the space left behind by the process of sending a small life supporting space into space. We used a lot of shadow puppets in this 2D space.

At one stage we explored the ethics of space travel using The Mantle of the Expert technique invented by Dorothy Heathcoat. Using the real life example of a holy mountain in India threatened by aluminium mining. We formed interest groups. The parts we link to space focused around the need for high grade aluminium used in the construction of rockets and satellites. The business group wanted the mountain flattened to get the aluminium for a satellite launch to run a TV network. The government wanted revenue from the enterprise to fund schools and hospitals. The environmental protesters wanted no change , the priests declared the mountain sacred and out of bounds, 1 village group wanted jobs and electricity and village group 2 wanted to not have their houses bulldozed for the factory.

They presented their case to the "Boss of the World " (Bill on a chair on a table) The first business group tried to bribe Bill $70 Million to just let it go ahead, (gasp) The priest drummed and chanted, the environmentalists protested, the government cajoled , the Villagers 1 supported the change and the village 2 wept and complained. The scientists did not recognised the Boss of the world as an authority, claiming "Science was above every other consideration" and the government retorted "That's why we need Governments"

It's not rocket science

well maybe some of it was
