Corlan means an enclosure, a sheep or cattle pen or fold but in this case we feel that it applies to the enfolding nature of community, a safe place, a place of trust, a circle of friends even.

This project is based around the Llandysul area of West Wales. The approach is participatory and arts activities are central to the implementation of the Corlan project

The Green Sculpture and sculpture trail by the river was one of the last workshops of the project many turned up to make sculpture from natural materials such as dead and fallen wood with Toby , Bill , Becky, Julie and Tom. The Tysul Hall was buzzing again for a few days while we selected materials, cut, screwed and nailed the pieces together.

The final exhibition and workshops were part of Llandysul's river and walking festival. The sculptures were accessed by walking the tow path from the bridge. Over the 3 days many came to the exhibition, workshops and barbecue and we were even quite lucky with the weather although the marquee the Llandysul Paddlers lent us came in very handy later in the day as the summer returned to it's usual drizzle.

The green sculpture was agreat success and some interesting pieces were made.

Thanks to all the people of Llandysul and surrounding area that took part in Corlan. We hope to be back sometime. The idea of Corlan, the safe enclosure, may even surface again as we love the concept of an enclosing safe haven in a world that can sometimes seem so wild.

Mid Summer Shadow Puppet /Storytelling and drama workshop

at Tysul Hall Saturday 21st of June.

Corlan's involvement was to support this event and to demostrate the adult learning outcomes and encourage play and learning with child minders parents and their children. Small World Theatre presented a shadow puppet show including lots of interaction with the young audience followd by a drama workshop exploring themes in the show . The children and minders or parents all joined in becoming animals from the show or other creatures and they also learnt some mime skills.

AIR FESTIVAL

Was on 3rd Nov 2007

Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi Playing Field, Heol Llyn y Fran, Llandysul

Kites, flags and much more

Karl Longbottom demonstrated some of his amazing kites and gave a workshop (£2charge per kite)

This was very much a participatory festival and people brought their own kites and the younger ones joined in with the kite making workshops . The Small World Theatre team are now experienced in making kites that fly fairly well such as sled kites, keel kites, Japanese 6 sided kites. Mostly we construct these out of recycled materials and other cheap materials that can be easily obtained so participants can go home and make more. This festival is FREE for this experimental first year.

There were brilliant kite demonstrations from “AIR HEADS” a kite display team that enthralled us all with their skill and enthusiasm all played out in the air against a backdrop of music and commentary. The last frame above was just as the kite operator was about to take off the guys cap with the kite with these 4 string kites. Despite the lack of wing the professionals got out their lightest kites with hi tech fabric and super light spars and wowed us all with their skillful displays. Would you believe it? a day in November that was so still.

A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE PADDLERS AND THE SCOUT GROUP WHO LENT US A GREAT TENT. WE REMAIN VERY GRATEFUL FOR ALL THEIR INPUT.

A paper plate / dragon type kite we made in Cardigan with 7 to 11 year olds. This unfortunately could not fly on the day as the wind was so low.

Small World Theatre chose to make sled kites for the crowds of youngsters keen to get a kite up in the air as they are pretty failsafe. The clear plastic is light and can be easily decorated by the children with permanent markers. So many children we running around launching them, tugging and teasing the line the sky seemed to be full of drawings.

Kite making and flag workshops with Small World Theatre and Carl Longbottom

Unfortunately the wind being so elusive meant that the ten fighting kite made with various groups could not get off the ground . We should see if we can arrange an impromptu day on a beach. Maybe we can get them all hacking through each others lines.

The wind on the playing field near the Beeches estate above the centre of Llandysul is usually pretty good so we hoped that it would be perfect between 11 and 4 on the day. Well it was sunny and dry at least and a lot of fun was had by all. The community came together for this event and people from all over town came to share the fun up at the Beeches Estate.

Thanks to the stroke Association group for the tea and cakes stall
