Small World Theatre are skilled in using drama techniques to explore issues and especially those related to Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship.
We deliver workshops both for teachers and students in primary and secondary education as well as acting as consultants and workshop facilitators for further education colleges and universities.
For students
We offer workshops using a form of Dorothy Heathcoat's Mantle of the Expert. This is a process we have adapted into a 2 hour workshop that also covers some drama techniques that we find very useful to inform the process. This child centered approach creates an atmosphere of inquiry which is also fun and exciting to do.
This workshop is also available with our show Cot Myrddin / Merlin's Coat, which is often booked by schools for transition years 6 and 7

An issue is chosen to investigate . Climate Change may be one for instance. It is decided who are the main protagonists or interest groups. I if 5 interest groups are identified then the group is divide in to 5 more or less equal sub groups. Each group will research or base their opinions on that groups' bias or viewpoint. If there are time tabling constraints as in many Secondary Schools this interest grouping and research phase can take place in a preliminary session using the web, library / other resources and discussion. The next phase is best to take place in a drama studio, hall or room without desks etc.
We will lead a drama session using freeze frame to initialize the group stance. Each will present findings and opinions that are related to or a reaction to a proposal, an opportunity to change or an external threat to the status quo. Their town going carbon neutral for instance.
Resources for teachers that we can supply
The West Wales ECO Centre has produced a CD rom that is packed with easily accessed information on a myriad of related ESDGC issues. We also have a supply of DVDs called "A Convenient Truth" produced by the Foestry Commission concerning the carbon sinking role of trees. These rsources can help to inform the research process. Small World Theatre will help with this phase and lead the drama process.
With our new "Sioe Coed / Forest Show" we can also offer workshps.
Workshops for juniors chools that are linked to our forest show may be an adapted version of the Mantle of the Expert as described above or we can offer for younger years a shadow puppet making workshop.
