International project

Syria

Small World Theatre delivered training in Arts and Culture for Development sponsored by The British Council Syria in July / August 2006.

Workshops took place in Damascus and focused around theatre for development , especially looking at young audiences and Giants.

Small World Theatre techniques were also discussed with the emphasis on participation. The phase of field testing development practice using theatre in villages in the Golan Heights was suspended due to the very dangerous international situation. For a visual and text explanation of some of our approaches to development use this link below

The work was based around the practical process of constructing a giant. We used the opportunity to discuss methods and rehearse a show. Participation of young people , improvisation, development methods were explored by participants who were actors , theatre technicians, and writers.

The workshops took place over 5 days in Damascus. The original venue was unavailable as it was requisitioned to house Lebanese refugees from the shelling across the boarder that was ongoing throughout our visit. Conditions were unusually hot , even for Syria, however there was a great commitment shown by all the participants.

British Council staff were excellent in helping Small World Theatre to make this, as many of the participants said " The best British Council workshop we have attended"
