The company has many years of experience in providing workshops tailored
to local needs in UK and internationally in countries of both North and
South.
Recently in Wales we have delivered workshops for teachers in Climate change using the mantle of the expert.
Other Climate change related workshops for schools that we are delivering are CLIMART WORKSHOPS in collaboration with the west Wales Energy Centre
We will soon have pictures of this 5 day process that works participatory with primary schools. The school at Mathry, for instance, will end up with a 3 metre sculpture of an " Earth goddess" rocking a world in it's arms driven by a bicycle wheel windmill. That's what they designed with us and thats what they all have been working on.
For children in Nantgeredig School, Carmarthenshire we carried out a 3 day workshop in the Rights of the Child resulting in a shadow puppet performance designed and performed by year 4 children.
Ann and Bill have over 29 years of experience each in delivering workshops for young people and adults Their work in Theatre, Arts and Culture for Development in Africa, Asia and the Middle East has equipped them with insights into a vast area of Human Rights issues and development themes.

The Christmas parade in Clonmel,Tipperary, Ireland was something
else in 1997 as four huge puppets appeared through the medieval
arch in a cloud of red smoke. The crowd spilled over the pavement
in their excitement to get close to the Giant Snow Princess, the
snapping giant King Rat, the fierce automated Terminator and the
strange and mysterious Forest Plant. Choreographed set pieces were
performed on the way with costumed attendants interacting with the
giants and between the groups on parade. This unique sight was the
result of a weeks workshop for four groups with Small World Theatre
staff co ordinating and facilitating the giant puppet building.
This exciting and memorable experience was enjoyed by thousands
of people as they filled the streets to witness an astonishing spectacle.

INTERGENERATIONAL WORK

Small World Theatre have worked as facilitators and directors on a nine
month project in Ely, Cardiff, one of Europe's largest housing estates
with all the attendant problems that are part of these large conurbations.
With the support of the community education service, the schools and
Age concern, the company set about exploring ways that the issues of
fear and mistrust that were evident between the generations could be
addressed and expressed in a dramatic presentation. It was hoped that
a climate of understanding between the generations would ease existing
tensions thus reducing incidences of teenagers threatening pensioners,
mugging, verbal abuse gangs challenging police and emergency services
and joy riding.
The initial stage was perception gathering. It was felt that a questionnaire
would be inappropriate and costly to implement so 1000 poems on intergenerational
themes were commissioned both from the schools and older people. The
poems provided a creative snap shot of opinion whilst being an interesting
process both to participate in and to analyze. Drama workshops in two
secondary schools, one junior school and the centre where the older
people meet also explored the themes. The company had more than enough
information gathered in direct dramatic, artistic and literary ways
to start the process of bringing the generations together .
After a false start in one school where promises did not match reality
the project moved to Glyn Derw High School and sessions were scheduled
for lunch breaks and after school. The excellent working relationship
with the head teacher and his staff allowed the company to progress
rapidly to make up any lost time. The sessions were surprisingly well
attended and the process of making shadow puppets and 3D puppets began.
The young people and the older people worked well together and communication
and friendships developed during the process of writing, designing and
rehearsing the production together. The performance was a huge success
and the participants, 18 young people and 5 older people, still maintain
a relationship. The aims of the project were met and even exceeded.
Once
again it was shown that this sort of work can lead to social change
.
A full report of the project can be obtained from SWT at £5.99p +
postage £1.99p in UK. mainland
Funding for this project was from the Network Foundation.
