In 1998 Ann Shrosbree was asked by the British Council to deliver workshops to arts practitioners wanting to draw on her experience in managing a theatre company specialising in theatre and culture for development.
The training was part of a British Council Zambia project, Giving a Voice to the Marginalised. The project aimed to strengthen the skills of Zambian artists to empower disadvantaged communities using the arts, and to provide a channel of communication from these communities to policy makers.
The brief was to run a 5 day course for performing artists and arts administrators to improve their management and financial skills.
Mildly astonished to think that others could benefit from SWT's long experience of surviving as a small theatre company she was reassured by participants. The Zambian steering committee had felt that the problems SWT was balancing to access funding and implement projects most closely matched those of artists in Zambia.
A lot of issues emerged from discussions with participants about the status of artists in Zambia and the particular prejudice women artists face both from society and from their families.
The course explored project design, funding applications, budgets and management plans using artistic skills and other participatory techniques wherever possible. Role playing presentations to donors was a situation in which performance skills were particularly useful.
Small World training sessions , workshops and micro projects have covered many areas of development and theatre work. The learning process is always two way. SWT 's exposure to richly varied cultural influences is reflected in their work with development education in UK.
