Mapping the past present and future of the River Teifi

All seven events are free to attend, but some need to be booked in advance.

Mapping 1: St Dogmaels

15/7/25 - 10am - 4pm - free entry

📍Yr Hen Ysgol, St Dogmaels

Workshops

Tetrapak Printmaking: Tracing our built heritage. 10.30am - 12.30pm and 2pm - 4pm

In these two-hour workshops, we’ll be learning how to reuse Tetrapak cartons to make a print. Using printmaking tools, sandpaper, scissors and paper punches we’ll make a record of the heritage buildings along the river.

Anytime throughout the day:

  • Explore a copy of Idris Mathias’s Manuscript map of the Lower Teifi Valley.

  • View the exhibition of creative work produced by Year 5 and 6 pupils from Ysgol Llandudoch,

  • Share your own stories and knowledge about the natural and cultural heritage of the river to add to the contemporary folk map.

Mapping 2: Biodiversity

Walk

Guided walk with Gretchen Taylor People and Wildlife Officer. 11am - 1pm

Exploring the unique biodiversity of the Lower Teifi Valley. No booking required.

Workshops

Creative collage: celebrating the natural heritage of the lower Teifi. 10am - 12 and 2pm - 4pm

In this workshop we’ll be learning how to make a collage with acetate overlay, combining drawing and collage to create a record of the wildlife and plant species along the river.

Mapping 3: Access

27/7/25 - 2pm - 4pm - free entry

📍Small World Theatre - Patch - Small World Theatre

Walk

A guided walk focussing on access to the River Teifi. 2pm - 4pm

A guided walk focussing on access to the River Teifi with Gill Wislocka (Teifi Valley Trail & St Dogmaels Footpaths Association) and West Wales Rivers Trust.

Starting from Patch estuary, we will observe rich coastal wildlife and wonderful views walking through fields and woodland. We'll find traces of Cardigan’s historic ship building and evidence of human impact as we pass by Aberteifi's sewage works and the Mwldan Flood Alleviation Scheme.  

Transport can be provided to Patch from Small World Theatre. The walk includes some rough terrain - please wear sturdy shoes. Booking essential.

Tea, cake and discussion:

  • The walk will end in a discussion, exhibition, tea and cake at Small World Theatre.

Mapping 4: Heritage

Talks

Lower Teifi Heritage Talk with Glen Johnson. 10.30am -11.30am and 2pm - 3pm

Drawing on an extensive photographic archive to tell the stories behind the bridges, pubs, castles, chapels and churches, warehouses, mills and mansions along the river. No booking required.

Workshops

Mapping 5: Food and farming

County Show Stand

Join Llais yr Afon at Cardigan County Show! Explore a copy of Idris Mathias’ manuscript map of the Lower Teifi Valley, take part in exciting, free children’s workshops with Ann Shrosbree, Bill Hamblett and other Small World Theatre artists. Record your views and stories in our new Teifi film booth.

There’ll be information about the project and experts on hand including Joe Willkins, ecologist and environmental campaigner, to chat about river and wildlife conservation and management.

A day out at Cardigan County Show

West Wales Premier Agricultural Show, with major livestock classes for cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, heavy and light horses and there’s vintage machinery too.

Mapping 6: Culture

Part of Cardigan River and Food Festival

Workshops

Teifi-themed Costume Making. 10am - 12pm and 1.30pm - 3.30pm

Transform yourself with a river-themed costume and take part in colourful, exciting parades at the Cardigan River and Food Festival this year. Make a floaty flag, a river cape or a river feature/creature cap inspired by the river’s biodiversity, wildlife and maritime history!

With Ann Shrosbree, Bill Hamblett and other Small World Theatre artists.

Parades!

Llais yr Afon Parades. 12.30pm & 4pm

Join Small World Theatre in one of the spectacular river-themed Parades after your workshop. Featuring giant puppets, musicians and colourful costumes.

Mapping 7: Cilgerran

Something Fishy. 10.30am -12.30pm and 2pm - 3pm

A free creative art workshop for all ages. Make a fish themed windsock to take home. No booking required.

Talk

The importance of Welsh place-names in understanding and revealing the history of the Lower Teifi Valley. 2pm

A free talk by Dr James January-McCann, Place Names Officer, Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales.
